Not invited to this meme party but I’ll crash it

Here’s to hoping something cool pops up in my random top 10.

From a random iTunes shuffle (entire library)?

  1. Wipe Out(live) – The Surfaris
  2. Saca tu Mujer – Tito Puente
  3. Blast – Gary Hoey
  4. Lullaby of Birdland – Sara Vaughan
  5. The Spirit of Radio – Rush
  6. Rubberneckin’ – Elvis Presley
  7. Maybe You’ll Be There – Diana Krall
  8. Devil Whip – Donald Bird
  9. Complicacion – Tito Puente
  10. I Can’t Stand the Rain – Ann Peebles

What is the total amount of music files on your computer(s)?
hmmmm, I’ve got 15GB on my Archos Jukebox. There’s a lot of overlap between that and my fileserver at home and my iBook. Probably around 20GB all together.

The last CD you bought is:
CD? What is this “CD” you speak of? ;) I’m actually not sure. It might the Maroon 5 – songs about Jane. The last complete CD I bought through iTunes was Gary Hoey – The Best of Gary Hoey.

What is the song you last listened to before this message?
It was last night, so I’m not really sure. But I think it was “What I like about you – The Romantics”. One of the best opening rifts in pop/rock music IMO.

Write down five songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you:

  1. So What – Miles Davis. The very definition of cool. A musical middle finger to the people who thought Miles was stale.
  2. Hawaii ‘78 introduction – Isarel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole. IZ was a HUGE star in Hawaii, literally and figuratively. He was an extremely obese man. In this song he talks about how his homeland has changed over the years. The commericalization of the main island. Highways through the sacred land. In between verses he talks about his own history with his estranged father, who died from a massive heart attack brought on by obesity. Knowing that he recorded much of his final album one line at a time, due to an obesity related breathing problem that required him to take a hit of oxygen after singing each line, and hearing the resignation in his voice, a resignation that signaled that he knew that he would follow his fathers path and die from obesity, is heartbreaking.
  3. Smooth – Santana. You can talk about how overhyped he was. But he’s pretty much been playing the same music for his entire career and not getting a lot of recognition. No one else sounds like him. I can always pick out a Carlos Santana song on the radio. I like artists that have a distictintive voice.
  4. Tank! – The opening theme song from the show Cowboy BeBop. In my book this ties with the theme to Hawaii 5-0 and Mission Impossible as the coolest TV show theme songs ever.
  5. One Big Rush – Joe Satriani. It’s just a really cool song. He’s one of the greatest guitar players that has ever lived, very lyrical.

Name three artists/bands you adore:

  1. Miles Davis
  2. Eddie Van Halen
  3. Diana Krall

Anything by Eddie Van Halen or Diana Krall is pretty much an instant buy. Miles turned the jazz world, and some of the mainstream music world, on it head by utilizing modality in a way no one had before. Eddie did the same thing with his guitar playing, almost single handedly changing the course of music in the 80’s at will.

Who are you gonna pass this stick to (three persons and why)?

  1. Brian – To inject a Napster shuffle into the meme.
  2. Tom – Just to see how much Tori Amos and Alanis Morriset shows up in his shuffle.
  3. this space for rent

  2. iTunes Meme Party

Scott issued a challenge to see if I could post up a music meme based on iTunes.

  3. Scott says:

hehehe, no I missed that. I think just about anyone with a lot of jazz in their music collection would have something off that record in their top 10.

This isn’t so much a comment about this post, but it seems your RSS feed is broken (not well formed). Thought you’d like to know!

  5. Scott says:

weird Ryan. It validated in Bloglines, NetNewswire, NewsMac, and PulpFiction. When I look over the XML it looks well formed to me, no obvious unescaped characters or anything. What reader are you using?

  6. A week late, but here’s my music…

Hmm, there appears to be a lot of cock in my playlist. Interesting.

  7. An introspective kind of day.

It’s been an odd day today. A few things have happened, or I read something, or I saw something that got me thinking ‘big and deep’ and that’s pretty dangerous for me. Usually something odd happens (that I do) right after it.
