Fred Hutch scientists induce hibernation in mice
Forgot to post about this a while back. This is one of those science stories that sounds stupid, but when you consider the implications, beyond the ScFi-like “put people into hibernation and send them to Pluto” kinds of ideas, this kind of work becomes more important. For instance, I wonder if surgical procedures can be performed on animals that are in this kind of hibernation? One of the biggest dangers during surgery has nothing to do with the surgeon, it’s the anesthesia. The anesthesiologist has to maintain a very delicate balance between keeping the patient under and keeping them alive. Maybe this kind of hibernation would allow doctors to perform longer surgeries with lower risks to the patient?
