Rory Blyth - Why do some blogs succeed? Why do some suck?
See, if you’re starting a blog to achieve some objective, don’t whine if the world doesn’t help you meet that objective. If you’re starting a blog so that you can expand business opportunities, get a better job, achieve noteriety, break the technorati top 100, get Robert Scoble to link to you. Don’t sit around and whine because it hasn’t magically happened despite your best efforts. I realize that every after school special in the world promotes this idea that “if you dream it you can achieve it” and “If you want something, you just have to work hard at it.”. But the world doesn’t quite work like that. Sometimes despite your best efforts, you fail. Move on. Don’t whine about it. But also realize that there’s no time limit, except for one that you set internally, on how long you might have to work to achieve your goal.
See I don’t care if anyone reads either of my blogs (yeah I’ve got two, they’re cheap). I don’t even try to be interesting. I just spew out whatever comes into my head. If I had a bigger ego, I’d say I was blogging in a very Kerouac-esque fashion. Sometimes I don’t even fact check myself. I don’t think I should be proud of that fact, but it is a fact (I think).
The idea that blogs are some kind of tool to achieve fame or success just astounds me. It’s not the BLOG itself that helps people to achieve their goals. It’s the work they put towards that goal. I know that sounds obvious, but it seems a lot of people don’t get it.
