I think this weekend is patient reunion weekend at the Hutch. In August of 2000 we had over 300 former patients come for the celebration. All of these patients were helped, in some cases kept alive, by pioneering techniques developed at the Hutch. I wonder how many there will be this year?
Kind of takes the […]

Reason: Unintelligent Design: Science is on the side of evolution
The anti-evolutionists affect not to know who or what the “intelligent designer” of their theory might be. He, she, it, or they could be little green men or purple space squid or a race of intelligent supercomputersâ??or maybe, just maybe, an omnipotent God. Who knows? We’re […]
Fred Hutch scientists induce hibernation in mice
Forgot to post about this a while back. This is one of those science stories that sounds stupid, but when you consider the implications, beyond the ScFi-like “put people into hibernation and send them to Pluto” kinds of ideas, this kind of work becomes more important. For instance, I […]

CodeBlueBlog: CSI MEDBLOGS: CODEBLUEBLOG ANALYZES TERRI SCHIAVO’S CT OF THE BRAIN
I haven’t thought much about this, maybe because I’m still convinced that I’m in possession of my teenage invulnerability. I’m also not a doctor so I can’t make any medical observations on her condition. The blogger at the codeblueblog is a doctor and has some […]

So a while back I posted a big announcement. Julie Leung left a comment about a demo that her husband had seen at a conference. The demo had to do with purifying, really just precipitating, DNA using some chemicals that you could find around your house. I had to learn a similar procedure back in […]

komo news | House Passes Bill To License Canadian Pharmacies
The amount of stupidity on display in this article is, as Brian said to me on ICQ, awe-inspiring. I’m sure that Brian will have a post where he points to the elephant in the room. I just wanted to tear apart a few choice quotes.
Rep. Sherry […]

Yahoo! News - Egyptian Doctors Remove Baby’s Second Head
Every now and then you see a story like this and you immediately think “That picture has been modified”. Then you sit back in awe of how often a developmental error like this doesn’t happen. Think of the error rate of the human race over the course […]

Governor Christine Gregoire says she has just the cure for the high cost of prescription drugs. She wants Canadian wholesalers to be able to trade in Washington State.
Now, compare that with this recent JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) article. emphasis mine

komo news | Seattle Scientist Wins Nobel Prize
It’s been an exciting day here at the Hutch. It’s not every day you walk past a conference room and see the poster “Nobel Prize Press Conference” outside the room. Dr. Buck, along with Richard Axel of Columbia U, researched genes that code for the odor receptor proteins.Of […]

Maple Valley Forum
Consider part of Glenn Anderson’s (R-5th District) closing remarks tonight, which were delivered to a room full of people over the age of fifty:
“Prescription drugs was brought up tonight. Do you know why people are against having prescription drugs from Canada? Because it’s dangerous. The reason Canadians get good drugs from Canada is […]

Yahoo story
CNN story
Of course the vet treating Natasha speculates that she suffered some brain damage after an illness and that may be what’s causing her to walk upright.
The science of weight loss
I spent a about a year studying metabolism in college. Everytime one of these new diet fads comes along I always ask one question: What’s the science?
You’ll notice that every new diet plan always includes the phrase “combined with regular exercise”. That’s because no matter what the diet claims, the creator […]
