ComputerZen.com - Scott Hanselman - Babies sleeping through the night: “Now that he’s put down he’ll cry here and there, but we believe he’s to young for us to Ferber him (in the hardcore way). However, we do avoid picking him up when he’s down as it just starts the whole process over. We stoke […]

“Steve Queyrouze, owner of three Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses in the Northwest, is from New Orleans. He is donating 20 percent of sales in his Bellevue, Seattle and Portland restaurants Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to the Salvation Army for hurricane relief.”
There are numerous other charities and churches collection food and money to send down south. […]
I think this weekend is patient reunion weekend at the Hutch. In August of 2000 we had over 300 former patients come for the celebration. All of these patients were helped, in some cases kept alive, by pioneering techniques developed at the Hutch. I wonder how many there will be this year?
Kind of takes the […]

…they’re dead. I had a day off today and about 10 hours to kill before my flight back to Seattle, so I decided to walk around Manhattan.
I started at 63rd and Lex, at my hotel (the Melrose), and walked over to 5th avenue. Then I started walking down 5th ave. My intention was to walk […]

OH wow, Brian and I were just wondering what happened to Joyland a while back. Looks like it’s for sale on eBay. This was the place to go when I was in grade school. Field trips and school parties to Joyland […]

Jeff Sandquist - Microsoft Evangelist - Welcome to Bitman’s Place
As a soon-to-be-new parent, I want to like this kind of site. I’ve given some thought to exactly how I’m going to get my daughter interested in science, technology, and literature.
But when I look over the site and see phrases like the following:
he has lots […]
The experiment is coming along nicely. She currently weighs about 12 ounces and has feet like her mommy and daddy from what I can tell.
Oh, and apparently she is a girl. The doctor got a little technical during her explanation. She said she saw “girl parts, but no boy parts.”. That’s a little over […]
Fred Hutch scientists induce hibernation in mice
Forgot to post about this a while back. This is one of those science stories that sounds stupid, but when you consider the implications, beyond the ScFi-like “put people into hibernation and send them to Pluto” kinds of ideas, this kind of work becomes more important. For instance, I […]
I’ve posted a few images of our new blooms in front of our house. The tulips really came in this year. They opened up so wide I thought they were going to turn themselves inside out. The Rhodies are starting to open up, you can see the red one has already bloomed. We have a […]

So a while back I posted a big announcement. Julie Leung left a comment about a demo that her husband had seen at a conference. The demo had to do with purifying, really just precipitating, DNA using some chemicals that you could find around your house. I had to learn a similar procedure back in […]

For yet another example of what I talked about in this post, please see the latest post by a left-wing guest blogger at an otherwise fine blog, Vodkapundit. Stephen Green is on a well deserved vacation and he apparently left the door open for anyone to come in and post.
update Just noticed that Matt […]
Rory Blyth - Why do some blogs succeed? Why do some suck?
See, if you’re starting a blog to achieve some objective, don’t whine if the world doesn’t help you meet that objective. If you’re starting a blog so that you can expand business opportunities, get a better job, achieve noteriety, break the technorati top […]
The Pregnancy diet is very similar to the teenage boy diet which is similar to the eating habbits of Hobbits. Mainly because they both expend TREMENDIOUS amounts of energy during the course of a day.
As my wife put it this morning in an email.
1st lunch comes after 2nd breakfast and before 2nd lunch.

Holy Shit! BTK went to my high school.
Southeast has double the dropout rate of Northwest.
boo-yah!
“If you’re gonna be a bear, be a GRIZZLY!”
The irony of this post is that I hated high school and most of the people that went to my high school. They were mostly preppie scum. I could care less if […]

While we were in Houston we drove out to visit some property we own out near Lake Livingston. While we were there, we saw this mailbox and I had to take a picture of it.

You might think you can rip cut using a jig saw, but you can’t. Really, the only way to rip cut is using a table saw. You can get close with a band saw, but the cut will be jiggley.

In an ongoing effort to somehow USE my college degree in some way or another my wife and I have decided to conduct our own little genetic experiment. The experiment is about 6-7 weeks along now and looks to come to fruition sometime in late Sept/early Oct. Both sets of parents are sufficiently happy and […]
